Functional neurologic disorders, also known as functional neurologic deficits, are disorders of the body’s nervous system caused by damage to the central nervous system, the brain’s “master” organ. This includes conditions such as:
Anosognosia, a condition in which a person has no concept of the body as a complex organism;
Anosognosia, in which the person does not recognize his own body as being sick; Aspergers syndrome, a mild form of autism that causes severe emotional difficulties, in addition to physical and mental limitations.
The term Anosognosia is used because the patient does not have any conscious awareness of their own bodies. This occurs when the nervous system is “overworked”, is not fully functional, and is constantly being damaged by damage in other areas of the body. Anosognosia, or “body blindness”, is not recognized as an actual disorder by the general medical community, but has been shown to occur in various medical conditions, including the following:
Brief, transient, or localized pain, including migraines, post-inflammatory and neuromuscular pain syndrome, tinnitus, headache, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, post-surgical pain, pain, and others. Mildly impaired sensation of touch or feeling in one or more limbs. Neuropsychological impairments including deficits in concentration, memory, motor coordination and attention, social functioning, and mood. Sleep disturbance. Anosognosia can occur in individuals who suffer from autism.
